March for Marrow and Celebrates 10 years in Southern California - January 16, 2010 to April 27, 2019
We are Southern California families who have gone through bone marrow failure diseases and benefited from the resources and research provided by the Aplastic Anemia & MDS International Foundation (AAMDSIF). In 2009, some us began to formulate a fundraising event, under the title “Hope, Steps and A Cure,” to benefit the patient and family services and the research that are provided by the Foundation. By 2014 the name had evolved to March for Marrow, which provides a feeling of action around the source of our problems – our bone marrow.
On January 16, 2010, Hope, Steps & A Cure joined the Mia Hamm and Nomar Garciaparra Soccer Challenge at the Home Depot Center (now the StubHub Center) in Carson, California. Mia lost her beloved older brother, Garrett, and although she cannot always participate, she has continued as an in-kind sponsor of March for Marrow. Since 2010 the Southern California team has put on successful events at Shoreline Village in Long Beach.
We are passionate about raising funds for AAMDSIF and educating our attendees about rare bone marrow failure diseases. Funds raised through March for Marrow events across the nation directly support patient and family services and research to find a cure. These services and current and future research are vital to us when either we, or our loved ones, are first diagnosed with these rare, life-threatening diseases.
March for Marrow Los Angeles includes a timed 5K run and a one- and two-mile walk in collaboration with our partner, Be the Match, which will be prepared to swab eligible attendees and enroll them in the national marrow donor registry. In addition, we organize a Silent Auction with exciting items like experiences at local museums and events, autographed memorabilia, dinners for 2-6 people, art work and gift baskets from local businesses. Last year, we added some more fun to our commemorative walk with a lively Poker Walk. In commemoration or celebration of our patients we offer a “Remember, Honor and Celebrate” board where we post the stories and pictures of our loved ones, a Moment of Remembrance, and presentations by patients who share their inspirational stories.
The Aplastic Anemia & MDS International Foundation is a patient-focused and patient–centered organization, serving patients and families throughout the three phases of bone marrow failure diseases:
- The life-changing phase of diagnosis
- The life-threatening phase of treatment
- The life-long phase of living with a chronic disease
The goals for these events continue to be:
- Educate the public about rare bone marrow failure diseases.
- Create a support community for patients and families.
- Raise funds for AAMDSIF’s patient services and for research.
- Recruit marrow donors through Be the Match.
- Increase awareness of the premier medical resources in the Southern California.
